What it is

The instant payment rail of Brazil

Pix is the instant payment system created by the Central Bank of Brazil. The payer approves in their bank app and the money moves between accounts in seconds, at any hour. With Localpayment you use it three ways: as a pay-in method, as a virtual account identified by a Pix key, and as a payout rail.

  • Pay-in with QR code or Copia e Cola, confirmed by webhook
  • Virtual account with a Pix key (email, phone or random) that also receives TED
  • Pix payouts in real time, 24/7, plus TED for same-day or T+1 transfers

Consumer experience

What your customer sees with Pix

Authorization, limits and refunds as documented on docs.localpayment.com. Limits are shown only where the documentation states them.

  • How the customer authorizes

The customer scans the QR code with their bank or wallet app, or copies the Copia e Cola code into the app’s “Pay with Pix code” field, reviews the amount and confirms. The response carries an expiration date; show a countdown and create a new pay-in if it lapses.

  • Documented limits

Pix (QR and Copia e Cola) (Pay-in): BRL 0.01 – 1,000,000 · Virtual account (Pix or TED) (Pay-in): BRL 0.01 – 2,000,000 · Pix (Payout): Min. BRL 0.06, no maximum. Per transaction, as published in the documentation; contractual limits may differ.

  • Refunds and returns

A completed pay-in can be refunded with PATCH /api/payin/{externalId}/refund. Only full refunds are supported; the money goes back to a bank account of the payer and the transaction ends in status 902 (REFUNDED). While a payment is still pending it can be canceled instead.

FAQ

Pix: frequently asked questions

How fast is a Pix payment confirmed?

Pix is a real-time rail that confirms in seconds, 24/7. For pay-ins the final status reaches you by signed webhook, so build your order flow around that notification.

What are the limits?

The documented pay-in range is BRL 0.01 to 1,000,000 per transaction. Pix payouts start at BRL 0.06 with no documented maximum. See the key facts table above and confirm your limits with your account manager.

Can I pay out through Pix and TED?

Yes. Pix payouts are real-time, 24/7. TED is also available for same-day or T+1 transfers, with a 17:00 Brasília time cut-off.

Which Pix key types can a virtual account use?

A Localpayment virtual account in Brazil comes with a Pix key (email, phone or random key) and bank, branch and account details, returned when you create it. Payers send Pix to the key, or Pix or TED to the account details: both rails credit the same account and trigger the same webhook.

Can I refund a Pix payment partially?

No. Pix refunds through Localpayment are full refunds only, requested with PATCH /api/payin/{externalId}/refund on a completed transaction. The money returns to the payer and the pay-in ends in status 902 (REFUNDED).

Does Pix have chargebacks?

Pix is a push payment authorized by the payer in their own bank app, so there is no card-style chargeback. Disputes are handled as refunds that you initiate.

Does the QR code expire?

Yes. Every pay-in response includes qr.expirationDate. Display a countdown in your checkout, and when it lapses create a new pay-in rather than reusing the old code.
